VAR have been slammed after Chelsea were awarded a controversial penalty against liverpool in extra-time of their UEFA Super Cup clash. The Reds were already cruising to victory as Sadio Mane fired them 2-1 ahead only for goalkeeper Adrian to concede a penalty for fouling Tammy Abraham. He was thought to have brought down the Chelsea player in the box although after careful analysis during the interval it appeared to be a minimal contact.

Also, pictures going viral has shown that Liverpool goalkeeper clearly has both feet beyond he line as against the rules, and the VAR had to ignore it.

Olivier Giroud put Chelsea in front, only for Sadio Mane to level as the match ended in a 1-1 draw hence proceeded into extra-time. Mane would score again before Adrian brought Tammy Abraham down in the box, allowing Jorginho to make it 2-2.

Chelsea Manager Frank Lampard was quoted to have said this about Tammy Abraham who lost the fifth penalty in the shoot-out “The fact that he is confident enough to stand up and want to take a fifth penalty,” the Chelsea boss said. “I have been there, missed penalties. Anyone can.

“I want the confidence of a young player to stand up and want to do that. I said not to worry. He will come back stronger.

“It is part and parcel of being a player in the top level, which Tammy now is. These moments come.

“We have to be very supportive of him. His teammates were, I certainly am. That is football.”

“I am proud of the players and if that is a sign of what we can do today then this season we can get better and it’s a really good sign.”
