Why I left Arsenal for United - Van Persie

Robin Van Persie has said that the main reason he left Arsenal for Manchester United was that the club did not offer him a new contract.

The ex-Dutch striker spoke in his new role as a pundit on BT Sport, revealing that he left Arsenal as there was no offer coming from them for a new deal.

Remember that on the 15th of August 2012, Arsenal revealed that they had agreed terms with United for the transfer of Van Persie, while he is yet to agree personal terms with the club.

Then two days later, Van Persie signed a four-year contract with united,  for an initial £22.5 million, with an additional £1.5 million to follow if United won a Premier League or Champions League title within the next four years. He thereafter helped United seal the Premier League title in 2013 with 26 league goals.

The former Arsenal and United skipper spoke thus;
“I think you can compare it with being married,” he explained. “Me and Arsenal were married for eight years and after eight years my wife got a bit tired of me. I felt that.

“I had loads of chats with Arsene Wenger and Ivan Gazidis about signing a new contract but they didn’t offer me a new deal so I had to explore my options.

“I knew how they would react, but I had to make a decision because I didn’t have an offer (from Arsenal). I have no regrets about my decision, and I hold no grudge towards Arsenal.

“I understand that fans form their opinions based on the information they have but in every marriage things happen behind the scenes.

“I’ve chosen not to speak about why I left for seven years, but it’s important that they know why.

“Arsenal is a beautiful club with beautiful fans and Arsene gave me the chance to play in the best league in the world.”

‘But, time heals all things, with the fans as well. I think it’s good to tell them facts, and i think it’s good to tell them that I don’t hold any grudge towards Arsenal what so ever, I had a fantastic time here.’
